Living Out Calling

A calling to contribute drives men and women to overcome huge obstacles to relocate cross-culturally, learn the language, develop all-new social networks, and join often low-paying organizations. However, once there, the reality of living cross-culturally, role adjustment, organizational mismatch, conflict with co-workers, etc. all work to undermine that original sense of calling.

Your coaching questions are great. The exception for me is that my original vision was crushed out and I'm in a new situation with no original vision! So developing vision, perhaps vision within the overall vision of my life is a task. I have some sense of vision but a thousand hindrances. These must be addressed so that I realize I have options; I'm not in a sealed box with no way out. The idea of incrementally making changes is also good. I remember when the going has gotten very tough in a couple of our life enterprises, my husband and I looked at each other and just said, "This is not a good stopping place." So endurance was required, and as you say, you will not always be doing your favorite thing at all moments. I call that a fact of life, and being willing to serve. :) I sometimes think the idea of discovering your potential and living it, is a luxury, only affordable in the richest countries. Is it a relevant question for the developing or war-devastated world? Or is calling/gifting different from the question of potential?

Thanks for that article! Very good! But of course not easy as "Jani J" mentioned before! If those issues are addressed properly it really could help to reduce attrition on the mission field. Something worth "fighting" for!

One interesting question for coaches is, "What's the difference between life purpose and calling?" A lot of coaching tools are designed to tap into your passion, figure out what you were designed to do, and have you live a life aligned with your desires.

However, I would define calling as an external thing given by God, a commission from him for an end bigger than yourself and outside yourself. For a lot of people, life purpose coaching tends to be mostly about figuring out what I want in life. How do we as coaches integrate what God wants for our life with a set of tools that look inside our hearts to discover what (or us or of God) is there.

Thanks for this posting. It was helpful to look at incremental steps when trying to help someone recapture (or rediscover) their calling
